It is a similar situation on the TV networks that carry the events, whether free to air or pay TV, they are emblazoned with online betting advertising. One wonders how these organisations were faring before the introduction of these new behemoths?

Sponsorship in itself, is a good marketing strategy, as it provides the opportunity for businesses to associate themselves with things like sport. The general public are passionate about their sporting teams and corporate sponsorship identifies that company with that sport or particular team. If a business is going to spend money on its marketing, it is best advised to stand out from the crowd. Corporate bookmaker sponsorship makes perfect sense when you put the excitement of the sporting contest together with their product – which is betting on the outcome.

There has been criticism from a number of charitable groups and social welfare organizations, as to the government’s role in allowing this sort of promotion of gambling. They see children being at risk of being encouraged to see gambling as a normalised part of sport. We have seen cricket stained by illegal gambling and players throwing games. Soccer has come under the microscope for similar activities. Rugby League players have been accused of being involved in illegal betting on games. AFL players have been suspended for similar issues involving gambling on the result of matches. It will be interesting to observe the long-term future of these sports and their ongoing relationship with corporate bookmakers. Right now, it is a winning strategy for those businesses – with the punters footing the bill.
